Sick shopping

This is my grocery shop when I’m sick. (Cold/flu)

Groceries

What I’m concerned about: Vitamin C, getting enough fluids, eating enough calories for energy, soothing my throat, cheering myself up, resting, sleeping, getting better.

What I’m not concerned about: My weight, how I look.

Bonus: It was two for one day on icecream. Win!!!!! So I got four. That’s logical in my head.

My Least Favorite Question

Awesomeness.

One Bike, One Year

It happens like this:

I’m seated around a table with a lovely couple from Oroua Downs––though we could be anywhere––surrounded by a breakfast of eggs on toast with fried tomatoes. The flavor seeps through the bread, salt and pepper. Alive.

Last night I camped (with permission) on the couple’s lawn. In the morning I will cycle the remaining 70km to Whanganui.

They ask the familiar cast of questions:

Who are you?

Where are you from?

What does your family think?

Are your parents alive?

How far have you cycled?

And then it tumbles out. My least favorite question.

It’s more of a statement really,

& it makes me want to gag on my toast.

“Cycling all this way, you must have lost so much weight?!”

Really? I smile and laugh it off,

not wanting to be confrontational.

I wish they would say:

Beach Body Ready

http://mashable.com/2015/04/28/language-worldview/

Have you seen this?

This is fucking awesome and proves just how far our thinking has come.

There is an ad in London advertising some magical weight loss potion protein thingy.

You know, magic beans.

Anyway it has a photo of a ‘perfect’ model and says, Are you beach body ready? Encouraging people to take the potion to become like her so that they are then ready/acceptable to be on the beach.

The response to which has been an overwhelming, fuck off, everybody is beach ready! We are awesome as we are.

They have been defaced and protested. There’s a petition with 40,000 signatures, it’s all over twitter, facebook etc. It’s blowing up.

This is great.

What is not great, is the proteinworld response. The model is an acceptable weight, everyone should have goals to be fit and look good etc. I mean seriously you have to read them to believe them.

Though really, what do you expect from an industry that survives by lowering people’s self esteem and generally telling them they are not good enough.

In case you havent got the message yet, you are.

In the words of my gorgeous friend Joy, “I don’t know any average women. All the women I know are beautiful talented and awesome.”

Indeed.

Food blogger fraud

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/belle-gibson-the-health-food-blogger-admits-she-lied-about-having-terminal-brain-cancer-10194764.html

This woman claimed to cure her brain cancer by eating quinoa and kale, or something.

The problem with this is that people have read this blog, bought the cookbook and generally bought into the pseudoscience once again.

Telling people who have serious illnesses that they can heal themselves by eating vegetables and doing yoga is quite simply bullshit, and is also highly dangerous.

Does a healthy diet and exercise help with general health and well-being? Absolutely. Is it a replacement for modern medicine? Definitely not. Of course it is the choice of the person who is affected, how they react and what they do/do not do to fight these illnesses. I just think they should have the chance to do this without so much misinformation lying around. Especially when they are already in such a vulnerable state.

These people should be fined and banned from the internet. They need to be held responsible for their actions.

Pseudoscience

This is a positive change in media that is happening slowly slowly. Let’s get on board. Let’s talk about these things. Let’s use facts instead of Heresay. Let’s educate ourselves and read reliable researched information. Let’s arm ourselves for the war against bullshit.

Anti-vaxxers

This is pretty good. It has been proven time and again that there is no link between vaccines and autism. The guy who originally came up with the theory has admitted he was wrong. Vaccines save lives. I really can’t believe people still use the excuse, my child, my choice. Some children can not be immunised due to medical reasons and age. This is called herd immunity. Not immunising your child is putting other children at risk. Also I know some pretty awesome autistic kids so even if it was related (which its not) autism is a far better option than a life threatening illness.

Seriously people, do some research. Real research by people with medical degrees not ‘research’ from random people’s blogs and facebook pages.

And in case you missed it the non vaxxers also recently caused a measles outbreak. This should not be such a big issue in this day and age.
